International Driving Permit Guide for Cyprus: How to Drive in Japan with a Cyprus License

If you are visiting Japan from Cyprus and plan to join a Tokyo go-kart tour or drive in Japan, you must prepare the correct International Driving Permit (IDP) before your trip.

Japan’s traffic rules are extremely strict regarding documentation. An incorrect permit format, a digital-only permit, or a permit issued by an unauthorized source will be rejected at check-in or by rental car agencies.

Why You Need a 1949 Geneva IDP for Japan

Japan only recognizes International Driving Permits issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention by an authorized agency in a country that is party to the Convention.

・Format Matters: The IDP must be a physical booklet that matches the 1949 Geneva Convention model.

・No Digital Permits: Japan does not allow driving with a digital version displayed on a phone. You must carry the original paper IDP booklet.

・Official Rule: You can verify the valid license types on the National Police Agency of Japan’s official guide.

Warning: Japan does not accept IDPs based on the 1968 Vienna Convention. Ensure your permit is the 1949 model.

Where to Get an IDP in Cyprus

In Cyprus, you can obtain an International Driving Permit from the Road Transport Department (RTD) or the Cyprus Automobile Association (CAA).

1. Cyprus Automobile Association (CAA)

The CAA is an authorized issuer and often the most convenient option for drivers.

→Look for “International Driving Permit” services.

2. Road Transport Department (Government)

You can also apply at the local District Offices of the Road Transport Department or Citizen Service Centers (KEP). The required application form is TOM 26A.

Final Checklist for Your Go-Kart Tour

Before leaving for Japan, make sure you have the following three items in your bag. If any of these are missing, you will not be allowed to drive.

・Valid Cyprus Driving License (Original)

・International Driving Permit (Original 1949 Geneva Booklet)

・Passport

Do not bring: A digital-only IDP, an IDP printed at home from an unofficial website, or an IDP based on the 1968 convention.
