International Drivers License Guide for Slovakia: How to Go Kart Japan with a Valid IDP

Planning a go-kart tour in Tokyo? If you hold a Slovak driving license, you need to be extra careful. Unlike many other countries, Slovakia issues two different types of International Driving Permits (IDPs), and picking the wrong one is the most common reason for rejection in Japan.

Here is how to ensure you get the correct document for your trip.

The Critical Difference: Geneva vs. Vienna

Japan enforces strict rules regarding IDPs. They only accept permits issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention.

However, Slovakia issues permits under both the 1949 Geneva Convention and the 1968 Vienna Convention.

・The Vienna IDP (Viedenský): Valid for 3 years. (INVALID in Japan).

・The Geneva IDP (Ženevský): Valid for 1 year. (CORRECT for Japan).

Warning: Many travelers instinctively choose the 3-year permit because it lasts longer. Do not do this. You must specifically request the 1-year Geneva model at the police station.

How to Apply in Slovakia

In Slovakia, IDPs are issued by the Police Force (District Directorate). You need to visit the Department of Documents (Oddelenie dokladov) or a Client Center in person.

Where to Go

・Authority: Ministry of Interior of the Slovak Republic (Ministerstvo vnútra SR).

・Location: Any District Directorate of the Police Force or Client Center.

・Official Information:Ministry of Interior: International Driving Permit (Medzinárodný vodičský preukaz)

Make sure to check the section “Dohovor o cestnej premávke… 1949 v Ženeve”.

Required Documents

According to the official requirements, bring the following to the counter:

1.Valid Identity Document (ID Card or Passport).

2.Valid Slovak Driving License.

3.Photo: One color or B&W photo (3.5 x 4.5 cm) showing your face clearly.

4.Fee: Administrative fee of €10 (check the latest fee schedule).

Note: You will sign the application form directly at the counter. Remember to tell the officer you need the Geneva (Ženevský) version for Japan.

Important Rules for Japan

・Paper Booklet Only: Never bring a digital scan or photo of your permit. Japan requires the original paper booklet.

・One Year Limit: You can drive in Japan for up to one year from your date of entry, provided your IDP is valid.

Pre-Flight Safety Check

Before you board your flight to Tokyo, open your IDP and check these three points. If you fail this check, you cannot drive.

1.Is it the Geneva Model? (Look for “19 September 1949” on the cover).

2.Is the Validity 1 Year? (If it says 3 years, it is the wrong Vienna model).

3.Do you have your Passport? (Required to prove your entry date).
