The Little Terakoya Hiyoko

A children’s cafeteria, candy shop, free space, and monk bar operated by Gan’nyū-ji Temple.
The name “Hiyoko” (meaning “chick”) was chosen because our temple is still new to Hachioji, having relocated here not long ago. Additionally, as Gan’nyū-ji celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2023 (Reiwa 5), we wanted to return to our roots. Though our temple is still small and taking its first steps like a little chick, we hope that our temple members and the local community will help nurture it. We aspire to build a relationship where we live and grow together.
Looking back on myself, I also feel that I am still like a chick—not yet a full-grown chicken. I hope to remain humble, to be someone who can stand by those in vulnerable positions, and to create a space where people can meet and connect without a sense of superiority or hierarchy.
Terakoya Hiyoko started as a refuge for children during the day and for adults at night. Ideally, we hope for a world where no one needs to seek refuge. However, that remains an ideal, and reality is different. While navigating the gap between ideal and reality, we may be taking small, unsteady steps, but we are committed to moving forward with certainty.

With over 20 new menu items available, diners can enjoy a wide variety of flavors. Every dish is also available in small portions, allowing you to sample multiple items at once.
The essence of Sichuan cuisine lies in the numbing spiciness known as “Mala” (麻辣). At Ma La Sensei, only additive-free ingredients and premium medicinal herbs and spices are used to create healthy and flavorful dishes.
