International Drivers License Guide for Australia: Driving in Japan with an Australian License and Getting an IDP

Planning to drive in Japan with your Australian driver’s license? Whether you’re renting a car or joining a go-kart tour through Tokyo, you’ll need an International Driving Permit (IDP) issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention. Here’s everything you need to know to drive legally and safely in Japan.

Is an Australian IDP Valid in Japan?

Yes. Japan recognizes only IDPs issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention, and Australia is a signatory to this agreement. Therefore, an IDP issued in Australia under this convention is valid for driving in Japan.

However, IDPs issued under the 1968 Vienna Convention are not accepted in Japan. Ensure your IDP explicitly states “1949 Geneva Convention” on the cover.

How to Obtain an IDP in Australia

In Australia, the Australian Automobile Association (AAA) is the sole authorized issuer of IDPs.

You can apply through your local motoring club, such as

・NRMA (New South Wales)

・RACV (Victoria)

・RACQ (Queensland)

・RAA (South Australia)

・RAC (Western Australia)

・RACT (Tasmania)

・AANT (Northern Territory)

Application Requirements:

・A valid Australian driver’s license

・A completed application form (available online or at club offices)

・Two passport-sized photos

・Payment of the application fee (typically around AUD $49 plus postage)

You can apply in person or by mail, depending on your motoring club’s procedures.

Validity Period

An IDP is valid for one year from the date of issue. However, in Japan, you can use it for driving for up to one year from your date of entry into the country, provided your IDP remains valid during that period.

Important Notes

・Not a Standalone Document: An IDP must be accompanied by your valid Australian driver’s license and passport.

・Beware of Scams: Only obtain your IDP through authorized Australian motoring clubs. Online offers from unofficial sources may provide invalid documents that are not recognized in Japan.

・Format Matters: The IDP should be a small booklet, not a card or digital format.

Ready to Drive?

With your valid Australian driver’s license, 1949 Geneva Convention IDP, and passport, you’re set to explore Japan’s roads. Whether you’re navigating city streets or embarking on a go-kart adventure through Tokyo, ensure you have all necessary documents for a smooth and legal driving experience.
