Most guides to street go-karting only cover Tokyo — but Japan Kart also runs tours in Osaka, and the experience is different enough to matter when you’re planning your trip. Here’s how the two compare, and how to pick the right one.
Tokyo Tours: Best for First-Timers and Landmark Hunters
Tokyo offers four route/duration combinations (60–120 minutes), departing from the Kanda and Shinjuku branches:
Shibuya & Tokyo Tower (120 minutes)
Route 246 to Shibuya Scramble Crossing, a photo stop at Tokyo Tower, then back via Roppongi and Tokyo Station.
Shibuya & Shinjuku (90 minutes)
Shinjuku and Kabukicho, Omotesando, Shibuya Scramble Crossing, and Yoyogi Park.
Asakusa & Tokyo Bay (120 minutes)
the widest-ranging route, through Tsukiji, Ginza, Nihonbashi, Akihabara, Ueno, and Asakusa, with a Tokyo Bay photo stop at Toyosu Bridge.
Akihabara & Asakusa (60 minutes)
a shorter route through Ueno, Akihabara, and Kappabashi, finishing near Tokyo Skytree.
Between them, the four routes cover most of central Tokyo’s best-known districts, making Tokyo the easiest starting point if this is your first time trying street go-karting. See our Mario Kart Tokyo guide for route-by-route detail.
Osaka Tour: Best for a Quieter, Local Feel
The 90-minute Osaka Castle tour departs from the Osaka branch and takes a different tone from Tokyo — fewer massive crowds, and a route through Tsutenkaku, Shinsekai, Osaka Castle, Midosuji, America-mura, and Namba. If your itinerary already has Osaka on it and you’d rather avoid the density of central Tokyo, this is the better fit. It’s also a good option if you’ve already done a Tokyo route on an earlier trip and want to see a different side of Japan from behind the wheel.
How the Booking Process Works (Both Cities)

1.Check-in and preparation
confirm your booking and present your license documents.
2.Safety briefing
traffic rules, safe driving technique, and a reminder that Japan drives on the left.
3.Costume selection
free costume rentals (anime characters, superheroes, themed outfits) included in every tour.
4.The drive
you follow the guide vehicle through the route; each kart seats one person, and support vehicles are available for non-drivers.
Driver’s License Requirements
Whichever city you choose, you’ll need to be 18 or older and carry the correct documents — your home license, an International Driving Permit (or an official Japanese translation for a short list of countries), and your passport, all as original hardcopies. Missing documents on the day means you can’t drive, in either city. For the full breakdown, see the complete licensing FAQ.
Which Should You Book?
・First time in Japan, want the most iconic backdrops → Tokyo, 90–120 min route
・Already in Osaka, want something calmer and less crowded → Osaka, 90 min route
・Traveling both cities → book both; guests frequently do, since the routes and scenery don’t overlap
Conclusion
Tokyo and Osaka each offer a genuinely different version of the same idea — driving through a major Japanese city in costume, guided, with the streets themselves as the scenery. Whichever city is on your itinerary, sort out your license documents ahead of time and book the route that matches the side of Japan you want to see.
