International Drivers License Guide for the UAE: Get Your IDP and Go Kart in Japan the Right Way

Whether you’re a UAE national or resident preparing for a trip to Japan, and you plan to drive — even just for a brief ride on a Tokyo go-kart — you must obtain a 1949 Geneva-format International Driving Permit (IDP) before departure.
Why the UAE IDP Must Follow Geneva Rules
Japan’s Road Traffic Law only accepts IDPs issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention. This excludes Vienna-based or app-generated e-permits. The UAE Ministry of Interior complies with this requirement by issuing Geneva-format IDPs both online and in person.
Issuing Authority and Official Page
The UAE Ministry of Interior (MOI) handles IDP issuance.
